Poets and Poems

Do you like poetry? I did not for a long time, but thanks to several book series, I now appreciate poetry. I really like Dylan Thomas' poems. Do you have a favorite poet or poem?

My favorite poem would be, "My Friend Must be a Bird", by Emily Dickinson:

My friend must be a Bird—
Because it flies!
Mortal, my friend must be,
Because it dies!
Barbs has it, like a Bee!
Ah, curious friend!
Thou puzzlest me!

Think about that poem. What do you think it means? Then look at my interpretation:

I think it is about a friendship. A very complicated friendship.

I also enjoy this one, "I Should Not Dare To Leave My Friend", also by Ms. Dickinson:

Spoiler

I should not dare to leave my friend,
Because -- because if he should die
While I was gone -- and I -- too late --
Should reach the Heart that wanted me --
If I should disappoint the eyes
That hunted -- hunted so -- to see --
And could not bear to shut until
They "noticed" me -- they noticed me --

If I should stab the patient faith
So sure I'd come -- so sure I'd come --
It listening -- listening -- went to sleep --
Telling my tardy name --

My Heart would wish it broke before --
Since breaking then -- since breaking then --
Were useless as next morning's sun --
Where midnight frosts -- had lain!

I do not think this one needs explaining.

I like Emily Dickinson because they have meaning that make you think, like these.

SURRENDER YOUR COOKIES OR DIE!!
I am on the SS as, well, shnoodlec. :)
Those are GORGEOUS Snoodlerella, I've never read those Dickinsons. And personally, my favorite poets are Tennyson and Shel Silverstien (although those two are different as night and- that's not creative, why use a cliche? Let's see... different as me and tigger after a zillion cups of coffee. Wait, maybe that isn't much difference.
Tennyson is great. My favorite is "Charge of the Light Brigade"

Shnoodlec, I love that first poem you shared.

I also love this poem by Mary Elizabeth Frye

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am the star shine of the night,
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.

Anyways here's another poem I like. Crossing the Bar by Alfred Lord Tennyson.

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For though from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.

I love the poems of hymnists and of Longfellow.
